In an unexpected escalation of the ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China, President Donald Trump unveiled a new round of aggressive trade measures aimed at Beijing. On Friday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to announce the imposition of a 100% additional tariff on all Chinese imports starting November 1, 2025, or possibly sooner, depending on China’s actions. The move also includes a strict export control policy on critical software produced in the US, signalling a drastic step in the ongoing trade war.
Trump’s decision comes in response to reports that China is planning to implement widespread export controls on nearly all its products, a development that Trump described as an “extraordinarily aggressive” stance in international trade. He further condemned Beijing for its actions, which he believes could have been planned over several years, and warned that the US would respond in kind.
Trade War Escalation
In his post, Trump emphasised that this new tariff and export control policy would be enforced as a direct response to China’s controversial plans. “The United States will impose a Tariff of 100% on China, over and above any Tariff that they are currently paying. Also, on November 1st, we will impose Export Controls on all critical software,” Trump stated.
He expressed deep concern about the “extremely hostile” nature of China’s trade policies, particularly in light of their recent actions to restrict the export of essential products. “This is a moral disgrace,” Trump wrote, referring to China’s proposed restrictions, which would target a wide range of goods, including rare earth materials and potentially even products not manufactured in China.

Trump’s move is poised to intensify the already strained relationship between the two largest economies in the world. In another significant move, Trump indicated that he might cancel his scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The meeting was set to take place in two weeks during the APEC summit in South Korea. Trump hinted that there was now no reason to go ahead with the meeting, citing China’s growing hostility and the lack of any substantial discussions on the horizon. “They [China] are becoming very hostile and sending letters to countries throughout the world,” Trump wrote. “I don’t see any reason to meet with President Xi.”
