A United States military KC-135 air-refuelling aircraft has crashed in western Iraq, prompting an immediate rescue and recovery operation. US military officials confirmed the incident and said emergency teams were deployed soon after the crash.
According to the US Central Command, two aircraft were involved in the mission at the time of the incident. While one KC-135 tanker crashed, the second aircraft that was flying alongside it managed to land safely. Initial assessments suggest that the crash was not caused by hostile fire or friendly fire. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.
The KC-135 tanker aircraft plays a critical role in the US Air Force’s operational capabilities. Developed by Boeing during the 1950s and early 1960s, the aircraft has long served as the backbone of the US military’s aerial refuelling fleet. It allows fighter jets and other military aircraft to receive fuel mid-air, enabling them to conduct long-distance missions without needing to land.
Meanwhile, escalating tensions in the Middle East are beginning to affect global energy markets. International benchmarks showed Brent crude oil prices jumping nearly 9 per cent, pushing them past the $100-per-barrel mark.
Reports indicate that operations at several Iraqi oil terminals have been suspended due to the deteriorating security situation in the region. Additionally, drone and missile attacks targeting countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait have heightened concerns among global energy traders.
Market analysts warn that if instability continues across the region, it could significantly disrupt global energy supplies and further drive up oil prices. For now, financial markets around the world remain closely focused on developments in the Middle East.
